| The
Australian Living Earth Centre was first proposed to The Cardinia
Shire Council in 1998. The concept was approved by the council and
7 acres of land at Emerald Lake Park was put aside in principle to
build this Eco Centre. The centre is envisaged to be an education
R&D facility to teach the importance of the web of life and to
experiment with making Renewable Technology more efficient.
The
central focus of the centre is a Cosmic Serpent that winds its way
through the bushland. It contains displays of species interaction
from nanodes to bacteria to large mammals. The skeleton of the snake
represents the chain of DNA connecting all species. The floor is
a time line showing how humankind is only a fairly recent development,
the corridors mimic the extinction events Earth has experienced.
Throughout the snake are domes, Earth, Air, Fire and Water which
allow visitors to experience these elements and understand how they
work in our natural system. Another dome contains a rainforest and
explains the intricacies of the rainforest system, tree growth,
basic hydrology, and the importance of trees for the production
of oxygen, pure water, healing plants, biodiversity and a health
balanced environment.
The
entire complex will be powered by renewable energy, and displays
of renewable technology will be on show throughout the park. Although
originally the council granted only 7 acres of land for the building
of the centre; recent discussions have shown that it may be possible
to lease the entire 100 acres.
As
this is the major stopping off point for Puffing Billy, one of the
major tourist attractions of Victoria, the center has the possibility
of educating a great number of visitors. Interest in the centre
as an educational tool has been expressed by all levels of the education
establishment.
